My
social issue project was over the Red Cross and many other blood blanks that
deny bisexual and homosexual men from donating blood. This is a global issue
that doesn’t only occur in the United States. Recently though they have allowed
gay and bisexual men to donate blood but only after being celibate for 365 days
(a year). This is unethical because it is denying blood to be donated to those
in need simply on discrimination. They do not require so much from heterosexual
people which is also discriminatory. This was a very important issue seeing
that I am a gay male and would be devastated if I was not able to donate blood
to a loved one simply because of who I am attracted too. It was a bit difficult
for me to figure out what exactly I wanted to create in order to voice my
thoughts on the issue. I had plenty rough drafts and sketches of what I wanted
to do but I decided to be more direct and go with the image of a nurse stopping
a gay couple from donating blood and creating signs in the background to really
make the viewer feel their emotions. I believe the artwork came out pretty good
and used different types of media such as watercolor, spray paint, markers,
acrylic paint, and pens. I decided to use the different colors of the rainbow
flag in order to represent the gay community and used a dark gloomy sky to
contrast the vibrant colors to represent happiness being overshadowed by
negative energy. I also used red paint for the text in order to represent blood
and give it a darker look.
